Needle Night

The Women of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church have been knitting, crocheting, sewing and quilting for new born babies through Care Wear Volunteers for many years. Hundreds of baby blankets, hats and toys have been donated to Beth Israel Hospital of Newark and blankets and quilts to Norwood Convalesce Center and other nursing homes.

In the Fall of 2002, the women decided that working on personal unfinished projects would be a pleasant way to spend some Friday evenings. The sessions have been called "Needle Nites". "We have learned new things, completed old/unfinished projects and started many new projects." Nancy Bassman, a spokesperson for the group said. " We invited the community to join us making tote bags as a mission project and sold them, raising $3000 for a well for women in Kenya."

This past year the group has provided quilting instruction and encouragement for those who had never made a quilt before and a challenge for those who had. These quilts will be on display at the Harvest Quilters of Central Jersey "Sharing the Quilts XXV" show on April 5, 2008 at the Terrill Road Bible Chapel in Fanwood. They can be seen at Fanwood Presbyterian Church after the regular service on April 20 at 11:30am. The quilts will then be donated to Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside.

On Friday, April 4th, the women will start two projects for charity: small quilts and small knitted or crocheted blankets. The Women can knit, crochet, quilt and sew and will patiently help and guide all who attend, particularly those who have never made anything before.

The group will welcome other women of the community to join them. Patterns, instruction and guidance will be provided. Please contact the church office at 908-889-8891 to reserve your space and to receive a list of materials for which project you prefer. It is not necessary to sign up for all of the evenings. Refreshments, show and tell and sharing of supplies add to the fun.

These "Needle Nites" are scheduled for Fridays at 7:30pm on April 4, May 2, June 6, August 1, September 5, October 3, and November 7. They will be held in Westminster Hall on Marion Ave in Fanwood. For more information please call the Church office at 908-889-8891 or e-mail fanwoodpres@erols.com

Youth Group Cindy Swindlehurst Youth Group@fanwoodpc.org

Fanwood Presbyterian Church Youth Ministry (FPCYM) exists to foster Christian youth Friendships, to Praise God, to Contribute back to God's kingdom on earth, to fulfill a Yearning to bring other youth to Christ, and to Mature our youth and leaders along their spiritual journeys.

Youth Fellowship

These are combined events that take place once a month in Westminster Hall and are designed to be a time of fun games and fellowship as well as a time of small group discussions.

Small Group Discussions

This is a time of group building and discussion centered on everyday issues facing youth that are discussed and contemplated with biblical references and understanding. Middler and Senior High discussion groups meet as specified in the schedule below following separate age appropriate curriculums.

Mission Opportunities

To engage in service to others, a variety of special events are planned throughout the year. These events may include trips to soup kitchens, collection for food pantries, help at recycling center, help with community clean up days, Souperbowl of Caring, service to Interfaith council for the Homeless, baking and letter writing to shut-ins, college students, and or military personnel.

Retreats

Retreats are a wonderful way for leaders and youth alike to become closer to each other and to God. Retreats are age appropriate events. Retreat opportunities are publicized in the church bulletin, in the Fanfare, by E-mail, and through handouts. Youth and parents receive appropriate information prior to the retreats. Scholarships available.

Meet the Leaders

Leaders are actively involved in the life of Fanwood Presbyterian Church and are supported, encouraged, and affirmed through the Christian Education Committee and Session of the church. All leaders are volunteers who receive training through special opportunities sponsored by Youth Specialties and our presbytery. Leaders are committed to strengthening relationships with children and parents through respect, trust, and understanding as we all continue along our spiritual journeys.
