Fanwood Presbyterian Church
History

The Past 25 Years: 1981-2006
History Overview | 1929-1954 | 1955-1980 | 2007-

Fanwood Presbyterian Church was at a crossroads as it entered its third quarter-century. The physical plant needed work, and membership – like that in neighboring congregations -- was not as high as in earlier years. A major fund drive called “Building for the Future” led to the transformation of the congregation and its campus.

The dining room and kitchen were renovated and again pressed into service for church and community events. The Thrift Shop – which continues to provide an important service every Wednesday also found a new home. The sanctuary and classrooms were renovated largely through the sweat equity of church members.

The Sunday School classrooms became Westminster Preschool in 1996 in response to a need for quality, affordable Christian education. The school expanded from 60 students in 1996 to 135 today, with a waiting list for one of the area’s most popular pre-schools.

The Sunday School and adult education programs took on new urgency during this period along with fellowship activities and worship experiences. Church members participated in Midday Fellowship, Habitat for Humanity, CROP Walk, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, Vacation Bible School, Retreats, Food Bank Distribution, Homeless Hospitality and Trustee Work Days.

An arrangement was reached in which Temple Sholom shares space in FPC's facility; it has benefited both faith communities and serves as an example of reconciliation and cooperation. The Temple has purchased property in Scotch Plains on which they intend to build.
